Traditional willow basketry in Toyooka, Hyogo
Key Features
It all began with baskets woven from Koriyanagi willow that grew along the Maruyama River. With about 1,300 years of history, Toyooka Kiryu Craft flourished in the Edo period. Willow luggage appeared, beginning Toyooka’s journey as the City of Bags. Over 1,000 kinds of baskets were exported worldwide, and a Toyooka basket received an award at the 1925 Paris Expo. After the war, craftsmen began making shopping bags. Today, artisans continue the tradition, creating elegant and fashionable baskets.
